SCPS #13 THIS SUNDAY & FINALE OF THE NOVEMBER CLASSICS!
Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

The 6th Annual Gene Galindo Memorial Turkey Trot Cross Sunday November 29th in Verdugo Park

The 6th Annual Gene Galindo Memorial Turkey Trot Cross Cyclocross race will be held Sunday November 29th in Verdugo Park in Glendale. This SoCal institution is being raced on its traditional Thanksgiving weekend as race #13 of the Southern California Prestige Series of Cyclocross presented by Shimano (www.socalcross.org).

Cyclocross is an exciting form of bicycle racing that takes place on a short, closed course composed of dirt, grass, and pavement. The course is less than two miles in length and racers in different categories do multiple laps to determine a winner. Race categories include junior boys and girls between 10 and 18, amateur racers in different experience categories and ages up to 55 and over, and elite men and women. Races range in time from 30 to 60 minutes and the tight twisty course offers unparalleled spectating. Spectating is free and the racing will be furious! Racing begins at 8:30 AM and concludes at 3:30 PM. There is a free kids race at 1:00 PM open to all kids under 10 on any type of bicycle!

Host club the Pasadena Athletic Association is proud of the race and will be out in force setting up the course as early as 6:00 AM! Sponsor ReMax Premier Properties of San Marino will be serving up fresh waffles and coffee to anyone there at the break of dawn.  And the race organization will be providing a hot dog lunch in the middle of the day. We are excited to welcome YUCYCLES (www.yucycle.com) as an event sponsor this year. They are providing prizes to our top junior racers! Be sure to stop by and see a demo of this exciting take on the sport of cycling!

With the Prestige Series showing tremendous growth this year we are expecting the Gene Galindo Memorial Turkey Trot Cross to be one of the biggest races of the year with as many as 300 racers participating throughout the day. And with weather expected to be perfect, the course tuned to perfection, and the park in fantastic shape, this year’s edition of the event is destined to be a classic! And in addition to cash prizes, there are specially made belt buckles being awarded to the Elite Women and Elite Men winners.

In the Elite Women’s race, junior phenom and multi time national champion Coryn Rivera will face some tough challenges. Coryn’s first ever Cyclocross race was in Glendale in 2004. She has won every edition of the race since then! This year, experienced vet Dorothy Wong is racing strong, elite junior sisters Kendall and Alexis Ryan are nipping at Coryn’s heels, and multi-time national mountain bike endurance champion Pua Sawicki has vowed to push hard to take Coryn’s crown.

In the Elite Men’s race, Mr. Consistent Brent Prenzlow --- who has won EVERY edition of the Glendale race --- is being pushed very hard this year! Gary Douville beat Prenzlow for district championships last weekend in Ventura while Australian mountain bike Olympian Sid Taberlay (who now races the US professional mountain bike circuit) and Prenzlow have been trading victories through the season. Evergreen elite racer Mark Noble and his son Chance Noble are always dangerous if they race and then there are wild cards such as Frederick “Fritz” Bottger, John Bailey, and John Behrens.
